Sigh… I guess it’s that time again. Literally, overnight the days have become so much cooler (great for helping the firefighters!), with a definite nip in the morning air; and we can already feel the darkness settling in a little earlier each night. Therefore, it won’t be long at all for our beautiful, well-tended summer container gardens, planters, and pots to begin to show the tell-tale signs of impending autumn as well.
But, as HUGE lovers of autumn, we think that’s great! The change of season means moving from light, bright and sunny to deep, vibrant, and bold. It’s just a matter of making the transition. And we’re here to help!

In autumn’s past, you may have simply let the summer pots dry out and fade, throwing out a couple of pre-potted mums and a pumpkin to mark the turn. That’s fine, of course, as fall mums are so dramatic and beautiful that it doesn’t take many to help punch up your front steps or porch. But, did you know it’s pretty easy to take those waning summer containers and transform them so as to enjoy several more months of colourful display that looks as beautiful as the summer arrangements you’ve lovingly nurtured?

Faux Botanicals: this is a terrific way to add some beautiful and durable, long-lasting oomph to any arrangement, outdoors or in. In amongst your living flowers and greens, add some unique details and touches with strategically placed faux to bring some individualized flare. We have SO many options to choose from and are happy to provide our design expertise to incorporate these lovely details in your container displays.
Pumpkins Hide Bare Spots or as Planters, Themselves: Easy peasy seasonal impact! Once you’ve yanked those dry and fading annuals from your container, fill the space with a pumpkin or two. The bright orange pop will go along way in providing impact. Choose a unique shape or size for visual interest and some pretty, fall whimsy.
Incorporate Texture: Adding natural, textural items among your fall flowers is a great way to bring some punch to your containers. Consider twiggy branches, twisty willow branches, deep green mosses, knobby driftwood, broad or variegated foliage and plants with berries.
Dark Foliage: With cooler days and increasing colour in our surroundings, bring your container arrangements up to speed with deep, bold colours in hardier plants that can endure cooler temperatures. There are several varieties that actually thrive in increasingly cooler temps and less light: pansies, snapdragons, and violas provide lots of interesting falll colour combinations.
Ornamental Grasses: Adding one plant such as Blood Brothers Red Switch Grass, with its vase-shaped clump of blue-green leaves that turn deep blood-red by midsummer and turn darker through the autumn, remains sturdy and attractive well into winter.
